What is AdBlue?

Despite its name, AdBlue is not a fuel additive. It's a high-purity urea solution, which is composed of 32.5% high-quality urea and 67.5% demineralised / deionised water. It's a clear, non-toxic, non-flammable liquid, and is safe to handle.

What is AdBlue Used For?

AdBlue is key to a technology called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). This system is designed to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. Nitrogen Oxide gases are a major cause of air pollution, smog, acid rain, and modern environmental regulations have become increasingly strict in limiting their release.

Here's how it works:

  1. Injection: AdBlue is stored in a separate tank on your vehicle and is automatically injected into the exhaust stream before the SCR catalyst.
  2. Conversion: When AdBlue is heated in the exhaust, the urea in AdBlue converts into ammonia.
  3. Reaction: As the ammonia and Nitrogen Oxide gases pass through the SCR catalyst, a chemical reaction occurs. The harmful Nitrogen Oxide is converted into a harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour, which then exits through the exhaust pipe.

This process significantly reduces the environmental impact of diesel engines, allowing them to meet strict emissions standards like Euro 6.
